In recognition of Article 53(1) of the Constitution of Kenya and section 8 of the Children Act 2022, the DCI established the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit to ensure and promote the principle of the best interest of the child and in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through specialized investigations.

It is therefore essential to create an environment where children can grow and develop in a safe, nurturing and supportive manner. This is because of their physical and mental immaturity, they need special safeguards and care.

SUPASTAZ is a film highlighting child trafficking in Kenya. Produced by Krysteen Savane and funded by the German Government through GIZ in partnership with the DCI Anti Human Trafficking & Child Protection Unit.

Krysteen Savane an award winning film producer and actress has built her life around telling stories that matter. But beyond the screen her most powerful production might be unfolding in Kibera – a safe haven for children and young adults who find their voice, strength and future in the arts.

Savane’s latest push to raise support came through during a fundraiser, an art exhibition hosted at the French Embassy in Nairobi.

The event showcased powerful artwork from Kenyan creatives and opened up conversations around art, philanthropy and youth empowerment.

Kenyan multi-talented artist Krysteen Savane, who is also the director of Anno’s One Fine Day Art Centre, Kibera, has been awarded the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters).

“I am deeply humbled and honoured to be knighted by the Government of France, a country that has consistently shown profound commitment to supporting culture and the creative arts, here in Kenya. Je continuerai à travailler avec les Français. Art speaks in many ways, and with time, I truly believe it is art that will change the world. While I may see my contribution to Kenya’s creative scene as modest, I am incredibly grateful that this work has been recognised today.”

She added that her art centre was founded as a space for exchange and mentorship, making the venue of the ceremony especially significant.

“This Journey hasn’t been mine alone. I have walked it with many people; most of you here know where we started and where we are. First and foremost, I would like to particularly thank Nick Reding for believing in me when I did not believe in myself and for allowing me to become who I am today. The lessons I learned from you and from the entire Safe Kenya family are lessons I carry with me every day.” Savane noted.

German Federal Minister Of Economic Cooperation & Development Visits The Art Centre Plot

On August 16th 2019, Gerd Muller, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, visited our project in Kibera. Accompanied by his wife and a small delegation he was received by 300 students from our One Fine Day art classes, who presented their skills in music, art, ballet, acrobatics and dance. During a walk in Kibera, we were able to give the Federal Minister an insight into the special living conditions of the children, and finally visited our newly acquired property, on which we are building our ARTS CENTER to secure Anno’s One Fine Day a lasting future in Kibera.

The Minister was very impressed by our project, the commitment of our engagement which for the past 11 years had made a lasting positive difference to the difficult living conditions of children in the largest slum in East Africa.

I’m impressed by the project and the commitment to better the lives of these children.
